Chandigarh, October 5, 2026: The Punjab Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, on Monday approved several important decisions concerning administrative affairs, nursing services, employees and tourism. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema shared details of the decisions after the Cabinet meeting.
New Posts in the Office of Chief Electoral Officer
The Cabinet approved the creation of new posts in the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab. According to the government, the move will help streamline election-related work and expedite official functioning. The decision comes at a time when work related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the 2026 electoral rolls is also underway in the state.
Amendment to Nursing Education Service Rules, 2016
The Cabinet also approved amendments to the Punjab Nursing Education Service Rules, 2016. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that following the restructuring of the department dealing with nursing education in 2021, new service rules could not be framed. During this period, around 1,467 nursing staff members were recruited.
In the absence of updated rules, employees were facing practical difficulties regarding promotions and other service-related matters. With the amended rules now being implemented, service-related procedures for nursing staff are expected to become clearer and more streamlined.
The Punjab Nurses Registration Council also undertakes work related to nursing education, registration and professional standards.
Important Decision for Non-Teaching Employees
The Cabinet also took a decision to bring the services of non-teaching employees working under PITS within the ambit of the society and regularise them. According to the government, the move will provide greater service stability to employees who have been serving for a long period.
Cheema said that computer teachers had earlier also been brought under the ambit of the society. The government has now taken a decision regarding the remaining non-teaching employees as well.
Focus on Promoting Tourism in Pathankot
The Cabinet meeting also discussed the development of Punjab's tourism sector, with particular emphasis on exploring and developing tourism potential in Pathankot and surrounding areas.
Located close to Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, Pathankot is an important travel hub and witnesses a regular flow of tourists travelling towards various hill destinations. The government believes that highlighting the area's natural and historical attractions on the tourism map can create more employment opportunities and give a boost to the local economy.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said the decisions taken by the Cabinet are aimed at strengthening administrative arrangements, resolving employee-related issues and accelerating development in various sectors of the state.
