Patiala (Punjab), June 7, 2026: For years, life was a relentless struggle for 51-year-old Harmanpreet Kaur of Patiala. A successful entrepreneur and a Top-20 contestant of the TV show MasterChef India, she battled a series of serious health challenges that tested not only her physical strength but also her family’s financial resilience.
Today, Harmanpreet is looking ahead with renewed hope after undergoing a successful laparoscopic surgery at Government Medical College and Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, with treatment support under the Punjab Government’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna (MMSY).
Harmanpreet had been suffering from excessive menstrual bleeding for nearly two years and was admitted to Rajindra Hospital on April 30, 2026. Following a detailed medical evaluation, doctors performed a Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy on May 2. The surgery was successful, and she recovered without complications.
Speaking about her experience, Harmanpreet said the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna lifted a significant financial burden from her family and enabled her to access quality healthcare at the right time.
Her medical journey began nearly 15 years ago when she suffered a brain haemorrhage in November 2011. The condition left her with long-term neurological complications, requiring continuous treatment and care. The prolonged illness not only affected her health but also disrupted her family’s livelihood, as her husband left his private-sector job to become her full-time caregiver.
The challenges continued in subsequent years. During her perimenopausal phase, Harmanpreet developed chronic bleeding, which persisted despite multiple treatments. Given her history of brain haemorrhage and neurological complications, surgical intervention posed considerable risks. Efforts to manage the condition through non-surgical procedures, including Mirena insertions in 2020 and 2024, provided limited relief, and the bleeding continued for almost two years.
Dr. Preet Kamal Sibia, Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Government Medical College and Rajindra Hospital, said Harmanpreet’s case was medically complex due to several co-existing conditions.
“She had been experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding for years and was also suffering from hypertension, Type-2 diabetes, hypothyroidism, psoriasis and neurological complications. A large fibroid further complicated her condition. After comprehensive assessment and careful planning, our team performed a Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy. The surgery was successful, and her recovery remained smooth throughout the post-operative period,” Dr. Sibia said.
According to Harmanpreet, she was enrolled under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna during her treatment after being advised by Dr. Sibia. The scheme significantly reduced her healthcare expenses and eased the financial stress that had accumulated over years of medical treatment.
She expressed gratitude to the Punjab Government for introducing the healthcare initiative and praised the medical team at Rajindra Hospital for providing compassionate care. Along with addressing her primary medical condition, doctors also helped manage her diabetes and psoriasis, ensuring a holistic treatment approach.
Beyond her health struggles, Harmanpreet’s story is one of determination and perseverance. A passionate food entrepreneur, she built her livelihood through a tiffin service, food cart and food van in Patiala. Even while coping with chronic illness, she refused to give up on her dreams and pursued her love for cooking.
Her dedication eventually earned her a place among the Top 20 contestants of MasterChef India Season 6, a milestone that brought recognition to her culinary talent and entrepreneurial spirit.
Now on the path to recovery, Harmanpreet is once again looking toward the future with optimism. She hopes to revive her entrepreneurial ambitions and continue pursuing the dreams that had been put on hold by years of illness.
“The cashless treatment and timely medical care have restored my faith in public services and strengthened my trust in the government,” she said. “Beneficiaries like me are examples of how affordable healthcare can transform lives, especially for those dealing with prolonged illnesses and financial hardship.”
Harmanpreet’s journey reflects not only the importance of accessible healthcare but also the resilience of individuals who continue to chase their aspirations despite overwhelming personal and medical challenges. For the Patiala entrepreneur, the successful surgery marks more than a medical recovery—it represents a second chance to rebuild her life and pursue her passion with renewed confidence.
