Rupnagar police solve Nangal murder case; 3 arrested, 7 illegal pistols seized in separate case

Rupnagar (Punjab), July 31, 2026: Rupnagar Police have solved the murder case involving the recovery of an unidentified body from the SYL Canal near Nangal and arrested three accused in connection with the crime. In a separate operation, police arrested two alleged criminals and recovered seven illegal pistols and six live cartridges.
Addressing a press conference, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Maninder Singh said an unidentified body was recovered from the SYL Canal near Patti village in Nangal on July 28. The body was taken out of the canal and kept at a hospital for identification.
Police circulated photographs of the deceased, including details of multiple tattoos on his body, through social media to help establish his identity.
On July 30, the deceased was identified by his wife, Neeru Bala, as Balwinder Pal, a resident of Bilga village who was residing in Dubeta under the jurisdiction of Nangal police station.
Based on the statement of the deceased’s wife, an FIR was registered at Nangal police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation was launched.
During the investigation, police arrested Amitoj alias Toji, Amarjit alias Judge and Gaurav alias Gori. The arrests were made under the supervision of SP (Investigation) Gurdeep Singh Gosal, DSP Nangal Navinpal Singh Lehal, and Inspector Danishveer Singh, SHO of Nangal police station.
According to the preliminary investigation, Balwinder Pal was known to the accused. Police said Amarjit allegedly had frequent disputes with the deceased while under the influence of alcohol and had previously threatened him.
Police alleged that on July 28, the accused intoxicated Balwinder Pal and subsequently murdered him before disposing of his body in the canal in an alleged attempt to destroy evidence.
The SSP said the accused had previously been involved in theft and drug-related cases. They were produced before a court on July 31, which granted police a three-day remand for further questioning. Police said further disclosures are expected during the investigation.
In a separate case, Rupnagar Police arrested Lakhwinder Singh alias Lakha, a resident of Madanpura village in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan district, along with his associate Raman alias Khan, a resident of Saini Majra village in Solan district.
The arrests were made during a special drive against criminals and gangsters under the supervision of DSP (Detective) Rajpal Singh Gill.
Police said the two accused were travelling in a white Maruti Brezza when they were intercepted following a tip-off near Shiv Mandir on IIT Road. During the search, police recovered seven illegal pistols and six live cartridges from their possession.
An FIR under relevant provisions of the Arms Act was registered at City Rupnagar police station. The accused were produced before a court, and police remand was obtained for further interrogation.
Police said the investigation is continuing to trace the accused’s alleged supply network and establish their possible links with other criminal activities.
