Fiction Film Week at SGGS World University explores the link between Literature and Cinema

Fatehgarh Sahib (Punjab), July 31, 20256: The Department of English at Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib, organised a five-day Fiction Film Week from July 27 to 31 at the Centre for Literature and Film Studies, bringing together literature and cinema through film screenings, academic discussions and student-led critical reviews.
The programme featured screenings of five films based on literary and biographical works. Each screening was followed by discussions examining themes, characterisation, symbolism, narrative techniques, visual language and the challenges involved in adapting literary works for the screen.
Dr Ankdeep Kaur Attwal, Head of the Department of English, inaugurated the event and highlighted the importance of studying literature alongside cinema. She encouraged students to engage critically with films and explore how visual storytelling can reinterpret literary narratives.
Ms Jaspreet Kaur, Assistant Professor in the Department of English, conducted sessions on Alice in Wonderland, Modern Times and A Beautiful Mind, focusing on cinematic techniques, storytelling and the process of adaptation.
Dr Baljeet Kaur, Assistant Professor in the Department of English, led discussions on Pinjar and The Little Prince, examining their themes and socio-cultural contexts.
As part of the programme, students submitted film reviews reflecting their independent analysis and critical engagement with the works screened during the week.
During the valedictory session, Dr Attwal appreciated the students’ active participation and observed that cinema plays an important role in reimagining literary works for contemporary audiences.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Mr Vinay Kumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of English.
