Jathedar Akal Takht urges Uttarakhand Govt to act over 'Repeat June 1984' threat
Babushahi Bureau
Amritsar (Punjab), June 27, 2026: Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, on Saturday strongly condemned an alleged threat made by Ashish Negi of Uttarakhand to "repeat June 1984" against the Sikh community, urging the Uttarakhand government to take immediate and strict action against him.
In a press statement, the Jathedar described such remarks as a serious threat to communal harmony, peace and national unity. He said Ashish Negi should not forget the sacrifices and martyrdoms of the Sikh community, which played a significant role in India's freedom struggle, and warned that such provocative statements could have serious consequences.
Giani Gargajj said the remarks reflected deep-rooted anti-Sikh hatred among certain disruptive elements and appealed to Sikhs to remain vigilant while travelling and avoid being provoked by such individuals.
Expressing concern over recent incidents in Uttarakhand, the Jathedar said repeated attempts by some elements to question Sikhs' right to wear the Five Kakaars must be stopped. He added that ensuring the safety of Sikh pilgrims and Punjabi visitors is the responsibility of the Uttarakhand government.
He also alleged that some local individuals had targeted Sikh pilgrims because of their religious symbols and attire before giving the issue a communal colour, creating tension between communities. He urged the state government to identify those responsible and take strict legal action.
The Jathedar cautioned that if such incidents continue unchecked, the Sikh community may be compelled to take a firm decision regarding travel to Uttarakhand.
He further directed the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to initiate legal proceedings against Ashish Negi in Amritsar over the alleged threat and anti-Sikh remarks, stating that strict action was necessary to deter such behaviour in the future.
