New Delhi, June 30, 2026: The Central Government has approved the reappointment of Ravi Agrawal as Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes for a further period of six months.
According to an order issued by the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Tuesday, Agrawal’s fresh tenure will be on a contractual basis from July 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The notification stated that the appointment has been approved on the usual terms and conditions applicable to re-employed Central Government officers, with relaxation of the relevant Recruitment Rules.
A 1988-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the Income Tax cadre, Agrawal assumed charge as CBDT Chairman in June 2024. He was subsequently granted a one-year extension in June 2025, which was due to end on June 30, 2026.
The latest extension is expected to ensure continuity in the functioning of the country’s apex direct tax policy-making body as it oversees tax administration, revenue collection and ongoing reforms aimed at improving compliance and strengthening the direct tax system.
