Legislators' lack of understanding poses a threat to democracy: Ashwani Joshi

Nawanshahr (Punjab), June 30, 2026: Social and political commentator Ashwani Joshi has alleged that the growing lack of legal and constitutional understanding among elected legislators poses a serious challenge to democratic governance and the rule of law.
Referring to the recent proceedings at Sri Akal Takht, Joshi claimed the public hearing exposed shortcomings in the preparedness of some elected representatives while discussing legislation.
"The live proceedings revealed an uncomfortable reality—that many lawmakers entrusted with framing laws lack even a basic understanding of legal and constitutional principles," he said.
Joshi argued that the episode has raised questions about the functioning of the Punjab Assembly, stating that legislation should be backed by informed debate and a sound understanding of legal provisions.
He further alleged that if important Bills are passed without adequate discussion or careful examination, the legislature risks functioning as a "rubber stamp" rather than as an independent democratic institution.
According to Joshi, poorly drafted or inadequately debated laws can result in legal disputes, administrative challenges and a decline in public confidence in governance. He also stressed the importance of transparency, saying that public proceedings enable citizens to assess the preparedness and accountability of their elected representatives.
Emphasising the need for competence in public office, Joshi said effective governance requires constitutional understanding, responsible decision-making and accountability, rather than political rhetoric alone.
He also urged voters to consider the competence and preparedness of candidates while exercising their democratic right to vote, stating that strong institutions depend on informed and capable lawmakers.
