Fake IAS officer arrested; Rs 100 crore assets under probe

Khagaria (Bihar), August 11, 2026: Bihar Police have arrested a man accused of impersonating an IAS officer and allegedly defrauding people by using the false identity in Jamalpur Bazaar, under the Gogri police station area of Khagaria district.
As reported by ETV Bharat, the accused, identified as Manish Kumar Gupta, was arrested on Saturday night following a tip-off. A joint team comprising personnel from the District Intelligence Unit, Gogri DSP Chandan Thakur and Gogri police conducted a raid at his residence on the directions of Khagaria SP Bhanu Pratap Singh.
During the raid, police found two SUVs bearing “Government of India” signboards outside the house. Gupta allegedly claimed ownership of the vehicles but could not provide a satisfactory explanation for displaying the official markings.
Police said Gupta identified himself as an IAS officer and produced an alleged IAS identity card on his mobile phone. A printout of the card was also recovered. During questioning, he allegedly claimed to be working as an undercover agent for National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, a claim that police said was found to be false during preliminary verification.
The search also led to the recovery of 23 credit cards, around eight debit cards and chequebooks from four banks. Police also seized the DVR connected to 11 CCTV cameras installed at the residence for further examination.
Among the other items recovered were 31 litres of foreign liquor, five iPhones and a Tesla car. Police also found two antlers believed to be from a barasingha (swamp deer), which could attract action under wildlife protection laws.
SP Bhanu Pratap Singh said Gupta had allegedly accumulated substantial wealth by intimidating and defrauding people while posing as an IAS officer. Police have estimated the value of his assets at around ₹100 crore.
The Economic Offences Unit in Patna is expected to assist in the investigation to determine the source of the alleged wealth and examine the financial transactions linked to the accused.
FIR has been registered against Gupta. Police are examining the documents, bank cards, vehicles and CCTV footage recovered during the raid to establish how the alleged government identity was used and whether others were involved.
The investigation is underway.
