Chandigarh, August 29, 2026: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Saturday warned Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann against taking action against government employees protesting in the state, saying such a move could have serious political consequences.
Interacting informally with reporters, Warring said protesting peacefully and lawfully was a democratic right of government employees and that the government should not try to intimidate them by threatening action.
“You cannot intimidate and bully them using the threats of action,” Warring said, challenging the Chief Minister to take action against the protesting employees.
He warned that such a move could have “far-reaching consequences” for Mann and claimed that it could even be his “last day as Chief Minister.”
On his absence from the Congress’ Rakhar Puni conference in Baba Bakala on Friday, Warring said it was not necessary for all senior party leaders to attend every event. He added that several other senior leaders were also not present at the conference.
Reacting to senior Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa’s remarks about the presence of “sleeper cells” and “compromised leaders” within the party, Warring said he would meet Randhawa and seek clarification on whom he was referring to.
Warring said he would ask Randhawa whether his remarks were directed at party leaders who had been meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
Agreeing that “sleeper cells” could exist in all political parties, Warring said such elements needed to be identified and exposed as they could cause more damage to a party than its political opponents.
