Breaking: Amritpal Singh’s close aide gets special parole

Moga (Punjab), August 29, 2026: Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, a close associate of ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh, was released on special parole from Bathinda Jail to attend the last rites of his father, Balwinder Singh, in Moga district on Saturday.
Balwinder Singh had died recently. Gurmeet Singh was brought out of Bathinda Jail on special parole to attend his father’s funeral in his native village of Bukkanwala.
During the funeral, Gurmeet Singh, visibly emotional, performed the last rites and lit his father’s funeral pyre. Several family members, along with leaders and supporters associated with ‘Waris Punjab De’, were present.
Amritpal Singh’s parents also attended the funeral and expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala is considered a close associate of Amritpal Singh. He had previously been detained in Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail under the National Security Act (NSA).
The NSA provisions against Gurmeet Singh and some other associates of Amritpal Singh were removed in 2025, following which he was lodged in Bathinda Jail.
Named Candidate for 2027 Punjab Polls
Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala has also been announced as a candidate by ‘Waris Punjab De’ for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, making his political activities significant.
After the completion of the funeral rites, Gurmeet Singh was taken back into custody by the police and subsequently returned to jail after the special parole period ended.
