25,000 Incentives for Those Who Provide Timely Help to Road Accident Victims

In a commendable initiative to promote road safety and encourage civic responsibility, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, has rolled out the 'Raah-Veer' Scheme. This scheme is designed to motivate citizens to assist road accident victims promptly, potentially saving countless lives.
The 'Raah-Veer' Scheme offers a ₹25,000 incentive to individuals who provide timely assistance to road accident victims. This includes taking the injured to a hospital and ensuring they receive the necessary medical attention. In addition to the monetary reward, these Good Samaritans are awarded a certificate of appreciation, acknowledging their selfless act.
One of the significant hurdles in encouraging bystander intervention during accidents is the fear of legal repercussions. The 'Raah-Veer' Scheme addresses this concern by offering legal protection under Section 134A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. This provision ensures that individuals acting in good faith, without expecting any reward, are safeguarded against legal liabilities.
Deputy Commissioner Gulpreet Singh Aulakh has emphasized the importance of creating awareness about the scheme. He has assured that any Raah-Veer facing harassment or issues can seek help from the district administration. A District-Level Grievance Redressal Committee has been established to handle such cases, with the Chief Minister’s Field Officer designated as the District Nodal Officer for the Raah-Veer Grievance Redressal Cell in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar.
Awareness is a crucial component in the successful implementation of the 'Raah-Veer' Scheme. The Deputy Commissioner has directed relevant departments to conduct extensive campaigns to educate the public about the scheme's benefits, the incentive amounts, and the legal protections available. These campaigns aim to dispel fears and encourage more citizens to step forward in times of need.
The Deputy Commissioner has appealed to residents to embrace this social responsibility. Timely assistance in road accidents can be the difference between life and death. By participating in this initiative, citizens not only contribute to saving lives but also foster a culture of compassion and community support.
Gian Chand Bansal Convener Swaraj Abhiyan said “The 'Raah-Veer' Scheme is a laudable effort by the Indian government to bolster road safety and empower individuals to act as Good Samaritans”. He further said “By offering incentives and legal protection, it removes barriers that often prevent people from helping accident victims. As awareness grows and more citizens participate, this initiative holds the potential to significantly reduce fatalities and injuries on our roads”
