Chandigarh University’s boxing team emerges 'Champion' at All India Inter University Men Boxing Championship 2023

Chandigarh, January 6, 2024:Chandigarh University (CU) lifted Men's Overall Championship Trophy in All India Inter University Boxing Championship, which concluded at CU’s main campus in Gharuan (Mohali) on 5 January (Friday).
The championship was organized from 1 January to 5 January by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) with the support of the Union Ministry of Youth Welfare and Sports.
The boxing team of Chandigarh University claimed the Overall Championship Trophy on winning 62 points and eight medals, including six Gold medals, one Silver, and one Bronze medal.
While Panjab University secured the second position with 30 points and 05 medals, Kurukshetra University attained the third spot with 20 points, and 02 medals.
As many as 12 students from Chandigarh University participated in the championship, out of which 8 students won medals across various weight categories.
CU student Vishesh won a Gold in the 48-51 kg category after beating Ashish of Panjab University (PU) in the finals, and Vikash won Gold against Rohit Chamoli of LPU in the 51-54 kg category. CU’s Deepak went on to win the Gold in the 54-57 kg category against Ashish Kumar of HPU and Harsh won the Gold in the 57-60 kg category, beating Mitesh Deshwal of MDU.
Pravesh Kumar beat Akshay of PU to win the Gold in the 71-75 kg weight category and Nitin emerged as the winner of 86-92 kg category against Jagvinder of GKUT in the final round.
Moreover, Deepak won a Silver Medal in the 60-63 kg category after he lost to Pankaj of Kurukshetra University in the finals. Sagar won a Bronze Medal in the 67-71 kg category.
During the championship, nearly 208 boxers from 100 Indian universities competed under 13 weight categories. All the boxers displayed great performances during the event with strong upper-lower hooks and straight punches.
Two-times Olympian and Arjuna Awardee, Shakti Singh Rangi, Pro Vice Chancellor Chandigarh University Prof. (Dr.) Devender Singh and Director Sports Chandigarh University, Raj Kumar Sharma were the eminent guests present on the occasion.
Apart from the boxers, different coaches, referees, and other delegates were also present throughout the championship.
Congratulating all the medal winners of boxing championship, Shakti Singh Rangi said, “If you work hard, nothing can hinder your journey to becoming a champion. Winning medals in sports is relatively easy these days, but there is only one key to it. If you invest five years in disciplined, dedicated, and devoted efforts, then it will pave the way for fifty years of fulfilment,”.
“In recent times, India’s sports industry has seen rapid growth with the Sports Authority and federations working swiftly. Today, when our country participates in various international games, Prime Minister Modi engages with athletes in discussions, boosting their morale significantly – a practice not seen in the past,” said Rangi adding the flourishing grassroots sports environment can bring about a significant shift in country’s sports culture and achievements.
He further commended Chandigarh University for its commendable effort in investing Rs. 200 Crore in sports infrastructure to promote sports on the campus.
Prof. (Dr.) Devender Singh, Pro Vice Chancellor Chandigarh University, expressed delight over the achievement of the CU’s men boxing contingent, and said that their remarkable achievement serves as a testament to the relentless pursuit of excellence at Chandigarh University.
He added, “Since its inception, Chandigarh University has nurtured some of the best talents in the fields of sports, who have not only won laurels at state and national-level events, but also at international events. The University provides state-of-the-art sports facilities for students to practice under well-experienced trainers and coaches. Moreover, CU provides financial support to the sportspersons through monthly scholarships.”
