Chandigarh, July 18, 2026: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) India, in collaboration with the Institute for Development and Communication (IDC), Chandigarh, will organise a stakeholder consultation on July 20 to discuss strategies for promoting safe, orderly and regular migration in the Punjab-Haryana region. The event will be held at The Lalit, Chandigarh.
The consultation, titled "Towards Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration: Insights from the PRAYAS International Migration Mapping Research Report," will present key findings and policy recommendations from the PRAYAS research project, implemented by IOM India in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs. The initiative aims to generate practical insights into migration patterns, decision-making, governance systems and migrant experiences.
According to the concept note, the consultation will bring together policymakers, researchers, migration experts, civil society organisations, private sector representatives and international partners to deliberate on strengthening migration governance and expanding safe migration pathways in the region.
The programme will also focus on issues such as ethical recruitment, skills matching, migrant protection, reintegration and awareness. It will highlight IOM India's 'Jagruk Jao (Go Aware, Stay Safe)' initiative, which provides prospective migrants and their families with reliable information to help them make informed migration decisions and avoid irregular migration.
The organisers expect the consultation to improve awareness of the PRAYAS report's recommendations, strengthen collaboration among government agencies, academia, civil society and international organisations, and generate region-specific recommendations to promote safe and regular migration from Punjab and Haryana.
The event will feature welcome remarks by Sanjay Awasthi, Head of Office, IOM India, special remarks by Prof. Promod Kumar, Chairperson, IDC, and Yashu Deep Singh (IFS), Protector of Emigrants, along with presentations on the PRAYAS research findings and discussions on migration awareness initiatives.
