Chandigarh, May 10, 2026: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday accused the Punjab Government of misusing the police and state machinery for political vendetta and warned that it would not tolerate intimidation of opposition workers in the state.
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, senior BJP leader Ashwani Sharma strongly criticised the alleged attack and “unruly behaviour” by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers outside BJP offices in Punjab. He also accused the Punjab Police of acting under political pressure and facilitating hooliganism against BJP workers.
Flanked by BJP Punjab State Media Head Vineet Joshi, Sharma alleged that the AAP government was weakening democratic institutions and attempting to divert public attention from corruption allegations against its leaders.
Referring to the recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) action in a money laundering case involving Punjab Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora, Sharma said AAP leaders routinely claim that democracy and the Constitution are under threat whenever investigative agencies initiate action against them.
“Neither Punjab nor democracy is under threat. What is under threat is the corrupt system of the AAP government,” Sharma said, alleging that the ruling party was trying to create confrontation and unrest to shield corruption and administrative failures.
Drawing parallels with West Bengal, the BJP leader alleged that the Punjab Government was attempting to create an atmosphere of fear and political violence in the state.
“AAP is trying to create a West Bengal-like atmosphere in Punjab, but Punjabis will not allow the state to move towards instability and lawlessness,” he said.
Sharma also criticised Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over his statements on issues related to national security and terrorism, saying Punjab had suffered immensely due to terrorism in the past and sensitive issues should not be politicised.
The BJP leader asserted that his party stood for development, farmers’ welfare, a debt-free Punjab and a drug-free society. He urged the AAP government to focus on governance instead of “political vendetta and propaganda.”
Concluding his address, Sharma warned the Punjab Government against intimidating opposition voices and said BJP workers would continue to raise issues concerning Punjab and its people “fearlessly.”
