New Delhi, May 15, 2026: The Reserve Bank of India has cancelled the registration certificates of 150 Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) in a major regulatory action aimed at tightening oversight in the financial sector.
As per information, the largest number of cancellations involved companies based in West Bengal, where registrations of 75 NBFCs were revoked. This was followed by 67 companies from New Delhi. NBFCs from Telangana, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were also affected by the action.
The central bank said these entities will no longer be permitted to function as NBFCs or carry out related financial activities.
Sources indicated that action was taken against several firms due to violations of regulatory norms, discontinuation of NBFC operations, or dissolution of the companies as legal entities. In some cases, the affected firms reportedly failed to comply with mandatory financial and operational requirements laid down by the RBI.
The RBI also noted that seven NBFCs voluntarily surrendered their registration certificates and exited the non-banking finance business.
