New Delhi, August 7, 2026: Lok Sabha has cleared bill to amend Payments and Settlement systems Act 2007 which will allow government to charge banks and other service providers for payments made via Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and other notified electronic payments method.
Government’s intention is to ensure long term revenue model for banks, payments service providers and payment infrastructure companies that constitute digital payments ecosystem while imposing a small fee on digital payments being made by consumers and small businesses.
